Photographer's Note

When we planned to sail towards South East Asia and go through Indonesia, my wife Vicki was dreaming of Bali, my dream was to see the unique Komodo dragons…

Nowhere else other than on three islands can we see them today: Komodo Island, Flores Island and Rinca Island, In the Sunda chain.

We anchored near the national park entrance on Rinca island and later went to the more touristic Komodo island.
A park ranger on Rinca Island escorted us (we were the only visitors) and armed with a long forked perch, for self defense, gave us a marvelous tour. We saw over 10 Komodo that day, because a buffalo had just been killed a few days before and they were all around for the meal.

Their main staple is the water buffalo and deer. We may think that they are ferocious and fast like a crocodile, but the way they hunt is very different. All they do, is wait for a pray, along a well used path and bite a leg of the next unlucky passerby. Not to rip the leg off, but only to transmit the very infectious bacteria that live in their mouth.

After a few days, the poor mammal suffers from septicemia (blood infection) and dies soon after. Sometimes it can be two to three weeks before they die, but the Komodo just waits patiently for the banquet…and they all show up for the occasion.

This is not a particularly great photograph, but I used our guide to give a scale of reference for the size of the komodo. Big males can be over 3 meters long and weigh over 100 kilo…

And yes, my wife’s dream also came trough and we went to Bali soon after…
