Photographer's Note

This elderly, an ethnic Lamaholot caught my attention, her eyes exudes happiness and satisfaction despite the well weathered look. Shot taken at Waiwerang, a small town in Adonara volcanic island on the east of Flores island.

Adonara Island is one of three small islands in a chain of volcanic islands known as Solor Archipelago located on the eastern end of Flores Island. Adonara is only separated by narrow straits and directly opposite Larantuka Town. South of Adonara is Solor Island where the Portuguese explorer first established themselves in 1522 when the Dominican Portuguese priest Antonio Taverira had landed on this island and started spreading Catholicism and became base for extending Christianity to mainland Flores. Further east, and the third island is Lembata Island well known for traditional whaling. The ethnic people of these islands are known as the Lamaholot who has close cultural link with Larantuka in Eastern Flores.
