Photographer's Note

This young woman gave an electrifying performance of the Baris, the Balinese warrior dance. Her whole body quivered, her headdress vibrated, her feet stamped, she leapt in the air with fantastic flounces of her cloak and brandished her sword with gusto, but her eyes gave the most dramatic performance as they oscilated horizontally at what appeared to be ten sweeps per second. The dance slowed as the dancer concentrated her being for another surge then with a signal to the Gamelan the battle continued.
The photo does not do her justice, but does give an impression of the energy she generated.
The Luh Luwih dance troupe perform at the Banjar Ubud, a new building next to the football field in Monkey forest road. Luh Luwih means the quintessence of the female spirit, the Gamelan is all women, Balinese music is learnt by listening and instruction and memorised, there is no written music.
