Photographer's Note

For my 15th publication on TE I chose to start a series of 3 pictures I named "Working in Hell". It will show the conditions in which the sulfur carriers of Kawah Ijen work (Kawah means "crater" in Indonesian).

Kawah Ijen is a famous spot in East Java, famous for its turquoise acid lake... and its sulfur carriers. These men extract the sulfur at the bottom of the crater, among very strong and toxic smoke.

It was already almost unbearable for me who had nothing to carry, but these men have to go up the crater with a very heavy load of sulfur, and only a dirty fabric in their mouth to protect themselves from the toxic gases...
