Photographer's Note

A close up of two 'phinisis' wooden cargo vessels which gives all the distortion effects in-camera I aimed for with complimentary green, blue and red colours to add to the flow. Sometimes a change of perspective is all it takes to see things differently......

A photo from my walk on a slight overcast morning around old Kalimas Harbour along Brantas River, Surabaya.

Setting: 16 mm, 1/30 sec, F14, ISO Raw 100, 0639 hrs

A symbol of Indonesia, this 'phinisi' is about eight meters wide and thirty meters long, built by the Bugis people of South Sulawesi well known in history as master shipbuilders. This type of sturdy 'phinisis' have plied over unbounded ocean and along the treacherous coastlines of Southeast Asia, Northern Australia and to as far as Madagascar, for at least four and a half centuries- long, long before the Dutch colonised Indonesia. She still plays a vital role today in transportation and inter-island trade within the archipelago's 17000 islands.
