Photographer's Note

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is located in East Java. It contains a vast sea of sand, the Tengger Sand Sea, in the caldera of an ancient volcano (Tengger). From this several new volcanic cones have emerged, of which Mount Bromo is the most famous.

The typical way to visit the volcano is from the nearby mountain village of Cemoro Lawang. Most people go on a jeep tour which includes the viewpoint on Mount Penanjakan, but you can also walk. Quite touristy, but the scenery is impressive.

This picture shows the view from Mount Penanjakan. The Bromo is the active crater on the left. The darker cone in the foreground belongs to Mount Batok.
