Photographer's Note
The sleepy town of Banyuwangi is in east Java. The black sand of the "beach" is composed of volcanic ash. Banyuwangi is as far east in Java as you can go. Taken early morning from the vehicular ferry to Gilimanuk, in west Bali.
The mountain is Gunung Raung, an active volcano which last erupted in 2002. It is 3332 m high, or 11,000 feet. "Gunung" is indonesian for 'mountain'. This website has some great images of Javan volcanoes:

Hi Chris, attractive picture, very nice foreground as well as the backgorund, stunning environment. The contours of volcanoes are so nice, it's the way kids draw mountains, so very basic.
I think 'under the volcano' is an excellent movie as well, with a really superb role of Albert Finney, the always drunk consul.
Thanks, Chris, gotta to rent tha film one of these days.

Hi Chris,
Yes this small town does have a sleepy character, I like too the low light that hits the houses, you have too a strong and nice contrast between this foreground including all the trees and the massive rising structure of the volcano we can see in the background.
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

A pleasant view, colors of the reflected sun are jumping out, several levels , each with their appropriate colortone, I like this diagonal in front.
Very balanced capture Chris.

Hi Chris,
A very picturesque place and perfectly captured. The early morning light is very effective and the row of poles is just fantastic. It sets the rhythm and guide the eyes. Congratulations!!! Regards and hebat sekali.

nice pov with the volcano just above the 3 coconut trees. it looks like a peaceful village despite the threat so close to them. I like the lne of "branches" in the foreground.

Hi Chris, You have done a great job to include the beach all the way to the 3322m high peak. The houses in the area looks like a small village. The palm tree provides the idea of the warm climate where this area is located. Nice to include the kids play on the beach.
I like this well composed, well taken picture with nice contrast and good sharpness. This is a very enjoyable picture. Well done.

Hi Chris,
Excellent scanning again, the low sun on the houses and the palm trees make you picture very attractive, wonderful composition with the great vulcano on the background, good note too Chris!
Greetings,

Very nice composition for this one, Chris. The multiple layers work out fine for this one, and the contrast between the colorful foreground and the pale-looking volcano seems to add a subtle touch of drama. Nice light you got on the tiny white houses. I was thinking of the same movie as Rinie, and added it to the movie titles theme.

hi Chris, very nice capture of the place
beautiful scenery, with mountain in the background and the village. the land around the volcanic mountains, usually very fertile, that's why they stay there although sometimes could be dangerous.

Hi Chris,
This is, no doubth, one of your best. Very good composition with scary background volcano and the small part of the village in front. The most touching part is the kids. The volcano and the kids.
Very very good job Chris and thanks for sharing...

Very nice view Chris, it's got a sort of classic quality. It looks like something you'd see on TV in a documentary. The golden light is perfect and the difference in haziness between the foregroung and the background gives the volcano a magical quality. The kids add a lot to the picture.

The low angle lighting is very pleasing and works nicely on the palms to draw the eye up to the dimmer mountain.
The foreground,mid-ground and distance are nicely balanced, but I think I might trim just a little more from the bottom and right hand edge to shift the balance marginally.
