The Jantar Mantar is the famous observatory built in Jaipur by Jai Singh, Maharadjah of Jaipur, in 1728. Together with 4 other observatories built in Delhi or Varanasi for instance, it allowed the Maharadjah to perform precise measurements of time, study eclipses, of the position of stars,...

The most impressive of these instruments is the sundial, with a 27m high gnomon, allowing time meausrement with an accuracy of 5 seconds. You can see here the marble strip on which you can read the time, and the base of the gnomon on the top right corner.
