Photographer's Note

The surreal and stunning village in this picture is Dhakhar. It was once the capital of Spiti valley, but it seems its glorious days are behind.

Today the ancient monastery of the village, which was also used as a fortress, is in ruins, and is replaced by a modern concrete monastery which is not visible in this shot. But the new monastery could never replace the breathtaking sight of the old monastery hanged precariously over the steep crumbling cliffs in the center of the photo.

Dhakhar sits over 3800 meters in the center of the scarcely populated Spiti valley, where the Spiti river branches out into Pin valley (Visible in the picture)
