Photographer's Note
This is one face which still haunts me although it has been almost two years since I last met him. I can still hear him say in his groggy voice chobi pathabi to? (Will you send me the pictures?). His piercing eyes despite his age, his crooked face is something I have never come across. Its a face to rememeber for sure. I had shot him in colour but thought sepia tone brings out the best out of his character. This man and the place where I had taken this picture has a history dating back a long way. You can find more about it in one of my earlier posts Old Man amidst the Ruins. For the closer portrait shot, I had decided to go with the face only instead of the ruins.

Impressive picture.....VERY impressive..!!!
His face, man o man, that is really something. This man has sufferd, probably all his life.
It's not to dark here, for my opnion you should also make the right side black so we have all the focus on the man, now that red part is a little bit disturbing.
But nevertheless, this portrait is high class.
Excellent work...extremely good taken..!!!

That face.......I can recognise. u took the ruin by keeping the person in foreground. Its really a face with exceptional appeal. But U must have a good eye to visualise that it will deliver an outstanding shot.
I appreciate your post processing, the selection of sepia tone.
One of the best faces ever seen.

Excellent portrait, Sabyasachi. The sepia tone helps to bring out the worn, weatherbeaten features here. What a tired expression in his eyes. A sad and touching image, but also a sympathetic shot, very well captured. Regards,

A stunning high-quality portrait, one full of emotion.
I hesitate to criticise, but can't help but disagree with everyone else - the sepia is a little too dark for my taste, and the dark area on the left doesn't really add anything for me.
But this is just my taste - this is one of the best shots I've seen, I can easily understand how he's still with you.
(Hope you did send him the pictures!)

amazing face! i really like the dark sepia, it brings out the details of the face well. plus, i find sepia often adds better to the mood than b&w. b&w would have given this a "cold" feel. i like that this face is more inviting and curious. it's a face you'd see in a movie or a dream.

This is one of those photos that would stay in my memory and give me really strong incent to keep taking photos. One of those photos I want to learn from.
Thank you for sharing and for the lesson you gave me.

I had goose bumps on my neck while reading your note. A most professional and, indeed, haunting photo. The sepia has worked fine to increase the drama. Perfect model and very dramatic expression. I think there is a bigger impact here than the photo in color, old man amidst the ruins. An excellent job. Cheers,

Hi
This is probably the strongest portrait I have ever seen. Every crease in his craggy face tells a lot about his hard life. Showing it with such colours doubles the shocking effect.
This picture is not only the effect of great photographic skills but also tells about the strong PS abilities.

Sabyasachi,
Your portrait of the old man is nothing short of sensational! Good art is open ended. It leaves a great deal to ponder and interpret -- in the manner of the Mona Lisa. (As the author of a book on Leonardo I should know). One intuitive discovery you have made is to put one eye right along the bisector, a discovery made recently (1998) by Dr. Christopher Tyler, a British psychologist/art lover who lives in San Francisco. This is something that is never taught in art schools, and yet the gifted portrait automatically seems to focus on one eye, and put it right on (or very near) the bisecting line.
Meanwhile, thank you for noticing the photograph of the derelict gas pumps. Regards from Virginia, USA, Bulent (Professor)

I don't feel now to write a whole story (just wrote a few large ones)
but hey...
A.W.E.S.O.M.E.!!!
Those details, so sharp!
Splendid expression, I believe your words immediatly, this face will stay with you for a long time. That man will have some great past, I guess. Very good!
I like your choice for the sepia tones, it's really good on this one.
Just adding two points (would like to add even more!), making it hit 300pnts.
Think I still made it longer than I'd intent before..

what can I say? I saw your pictures. Each one, litterally each one is a little masterpiece for me. Majority of your pictures shows exotic (for me) India.. and it shows your country in such interesting, different way, that I started to plan my visit in India in the future. Not only to visit Taj Mahal and other beautiful places of Indian history and culture, but to meet people you show us.
I choose this one from your portfolio because of the eyes of this old man. The eyes looks tired...

Hi Sabyasachi,
I can understand why this photo have obtained so much admiration. This is a very good portrait, with special character and a lot of emotion. I only regret that there is so much airbrush and other highly visible retouch all over. We can see on his beard and on the upper left corner all the lost details in white hair, but what stay in mind is the expression of this man that you were able to capture. AM

Quite a stunning face and a very emotionally moving capture Sabyasachi but for me there are a few things which leave this image wanting in terms of quality from what seems to have been a situation for ample time to take a truly masterful portrait - I just assume this wasn't candid as such - the burn on his beard is a serious problem and would seriously weaken the quality of a print of this image - the eyes are also really quite dark (in fact heavy black detail killing shadows are another issue) and I'm sure might have revealed more light relatively easily without this high contrast rendition - or perhaps being a little more selective with it. I'm also not greatly in favour of the light 'leakage' on the right of the picture - whilst I agree with the absolute hoard of people who seem to have made this subject one of their favourites here on TE I do think that photographically you may have been capable of doing so much more to make this a truly great photograph and I find your pp dramatic but 'clunky'.
Perhaps the overwhelming response says as much about the judgement of TE members as about your photograph per se - just look at any Selgado portrait to see what I mean..............
best wishes Kev

I would like to see the camera original of this picture. The face as it stands in this version is very very disturbing. And this exactly is the reason that this kind of photography is not in my taste. I look for beauty even in ruins because beauty represents God most accurately.

Hi Sabyasachi
I've got quite different point of view than all those 1000's of people ... I like Your works ... BUT ... :
First of all is that You've made interesting photo. It is enough "catchy", to gain some number of comments. True. But It gained absolutely huge number of attention ... And I can see in this massive commentary, kind of "must do" process, if You know what I mean.
I rally don't want to blame You or anything like that. I've respect for Your talent because You got it, no doubts.
Now, I'd like tell it to all those blind people who comment without thinking. I've very strong feeling ( I'm nearly sure ) that they can only see number of comments and after that they decide to comment also. Like sheeps. But this is normal process in all the way. Especially here in TE. People look at number of points/comments and then they decide to add something.
So, If person like You took photo, no matter how good or bad it is, people comment it indeed. There's tons of "Wow's, impessions etc.". In my opinion it's just blindness. I really appreciate Your talent and talent of other people. But be honest - It's just routine of what is going on here. And this is very unfair to those who are beginners here in TE - like me.
I'd like read criticism from people, because I'm member of TE to learn different points of view, not to be ignored ! But true - people just ignore my photos.
I have friends who are professionals. They told me that some of my own photos are just great and deserve massive comments. Others are just misunderstanding. And it rally helps ! But here ? Nothing happened. My works are ignored. Why ? Because I don't know anyone here in TE ? Or maybe I haven't collected enough points ? Or maybe because I don't have excellent equipment ? So please - stop talking about talent. Because talented people here are just ignored by others with 1000's of points. That's sad true.
In addition - when I saw Your photo first time, I thought - how unique face this Man has got. But in my opinion, - that's all about it. You did great job plenty of times before because You know well how to do it and - like I wrote before - You've got a talent. In my own opinion, there's too much improving effects - and an example - "snow balls" effect ( I just don't like it ).
I've hope You understand well, what I've tried to tell You and to others.
Keep Your eyes on topic and I wish You another interesting photos ! You are better photographer than me - no doubts !
But I have my own point of view on topic - not like all those "WOW"-People ... Who are just very predictible. It's sad for me.
Take care and regards!
Lukasz

Hi Sabyasachi,
I have no word to describe my feeling now in front of this picture. The sepia, the vignette, the contrast just reveal a story of a old man, time left marks on his skin, deep wrinkles which supposed to symbolize the adversity of Life.
Wonderful portrait, very emotional.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing this here.
Best regards,

A stunning portrait, sepia color brings out the sweetness and generosity that emerges from this look so tired, every feature of this face is a novel, one never tires of reading his story, his life through what emerges from power and also of fragility in the face.
Best regards,

Yes, this man's face is like a history book, an old book dog-eared and stained, the kind of face that burns into the memory.

And That's what is called the Power of Tight Frame. When shooting portrait we really aim to bring out the character of the person. In this case, the "ruined life" of the man has been characterised appropriately by tight framing. The 'another man' portrait of yours is also similar. well taken and thanks for sharing.
Will it be appropriate to ask you what post processing you did on this.
Best regards and keep posting such work.

This is very strong photo and great choice of colours.
I like the vignette, but I think it is a bit too visible across his beard and also not sure what happened to right side of his beard. But those are small details.
The atmosphere of the photo is brilliant.
