School transport, a photo from Andhra Pradesh, South

Photographer's Note

Seeing this photo for probably the first time in 33 years I noticed the sharpness is mainly on the area just behind the rickshaw taking the children to school, or back home. But it was obviously a snapshot with a preparation of about three seconds, so such things happen. At least the exposure was okay and I guess the scan (this was as usual a Kodachrome slide) is not too bad.

This is from the large city of Hyderabad, where I arrived after 21 hours on a train heading south from Bhubaneswar in Orissa state. In 1987 Hyderabad was the capital of Andhra Pradesh state. In 2014, long after TE technicians stopped caring for the site, the state was divided and now this is the capital of the new state called Telangana. But don't expect Telangana ever to feature on the TE map.

My diary from that journey says nothing about this photo, nor about the quite different view shown in the WS.

Must say, Gert, I would choose the WS photo worth to be posted as main. In my humble opinion it has a vibrant scale and good sight in vivid colors of a daily life action. Both are worth, that's beside main picture here with attractive road motion and happenings.

Indeed lots to look at in this daily life scene from a big city, I love it. the first thing that struck me, apart from the old ambassadors, is that even in 1987 it seems only the rickshaw wallah wears a longyi, whereas in Burma even today and in the cities, still the majority of men wear the traditional longyi
On the bakery I see advertisements for Glucose D biscuits, urghhh and ThumsUp cola, again urghh

This beautiful photo from 1987 shows a wonderful alternative for transporting Dutch children to and from school.
There are many variants in use here but I have not yet seen this simple solution used here
First the kids to school and then make some money driving the tourists around. In Dutch we would say: Two flies in one blow.

Hej Gert

A good daily life shot as life was in this town way back in 1987. " Since the 1990s, the city has emerged as an Indian hub of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. The formation of special economic zones and HITEC City dedicated to information technology has encouraged leading multinationals to set up operations in Hyderabad." So I would imagine there have been a lot of changes to the city since then. The schoolkids seated on the pedal powered rickshaws look like they don't have a care in the world. Tfs!

You show today the realistic representation of urban crowding through which people have to zigzag with irritation to ensure the consideration of their rights.
Consequently they sometimes have to live dangerously, as these schoolchildren not wearing seat belts.
You carried out a convincing document on traffic tolerance nicely captured for lot of depth.

Hello Gert,
I suspect that the traffic situation in Hyderabad has changed to such an extent that cycling at this intersection is far too dangerous now. I remember that on my second last journey in India, in Bangalore it was terribly difficult for a pedestrian to cross certain streets.
Such pictures remain a beautiful memory. It's a very cute view of the five children in the bicycle rickshaw.
The girl in the red dress on the left has noticed you.

Interesting photo of the shopping arcade in the WS.
Do you also have pictures of the Charminar?
I was surprised that you classified Hyderabad under Andhra Pradesh state. But your note explains it.

Hello Gert, a daily life picture then, that probably is not seen any more. An economical way to transport the children to school.
The girl in the red dress is probably wondering what you are doing!
Both shots are scanned really well.
Those children are all grown up now, more than likely with families of their own!

excellent image. I guess I saw few bikes while in india, looks most of people had tuc-tucs producing many smoke. a nice flagrant of this curious large bike filled with children. nice flagrant.
here we had some abundant rain and the vaccinations will begun in the main city near mine today.

Yes, the focus is behind the rickshaw but you don't really notice it on the normal size picture. Wonderful, perfectly timed shot of this special form of public transport. The girl with red dress on the other bike is charming too.

The sharpness is acceptable, at least in this size I don't see any problem with it. Its a nice daily shot and an important documentary anyhow. I like the WS too with the crowded market too!

Hello Gert,

Getting children to school was important Hyderabad and what better way than so many propelled on one bicycle. This would be a great method to adopt at home as one of the safety problems that we have is the presence of lots of cars, arriving at school, on a narrow lane, bringing children. Legs seem to be obsolete ... for walking!
It's a very interesting documentary shot. Love the old cars in the b/g.

The shopping arcade is equally interesting! There is a huge amount of stock and a few items that do not fit the trend.
If you look at the details of the pillars and the ceiling, this looks to have been the veranda for a grand building.

Never mind the focus, this is a really well timed photo. Better to have this than a photo sharp in the middle with half the rickshaw...

Hi Gert,in fact the quality of the photo is very high, and it is nice to see this scene of everyday life for the transport of children, here this gentleman would have been arrested immediately due to our too restrictive safety rules ... ehehe ... Hello Gert, Local transportation is for me always fascinating, especially in Asia and, recently, Africa. Nice scene from Hyderabad.
I was there but in the town, I remember mainly Charminar. The main attraction was for me Golkonda. The day there as the hottest day in all of my trips. I was there in March, when no one reasonable goes to India.
