Photographer's Note

During Gangaur festival, women wear their finery: they wear new saris very colorful and their finest gold jewelry. Mehndi (henna designs) adorn their palms and feet. Some women observe a fast during this period by eating only once a day. The highlight of these festivities are the colorful processions of women and girls who roam the streets of the old city carrying on their heads, to the lake Pichola, the effigies of Shiva and Parvati. Following recent anti-pollution laws, effigies are no longer immersed in the lake.
