Photographer's Note

While staying for a few days in the old part of Delhi in 1977 I met a procession of vehicles carrying men dressed like Hindu deities. I don't know if it was part of a religious festival, but of course I took a few photos of the bright and exotic costumes in the surrounding environment of temples and an ancient city wall.

Today I would have taken many photos, but in those days of analogue film I took... a few.

I don't know who this sword-carrying deity is supposed to be, and the young men carrying bows, seen in the WS, are also unknown to me. Maybe Satya will recognize them.

Indeed, this is some of what Satya kindly informed me:
The man with the sword (main post) likely depicts 'Ravana', the demon king from the Ramayana. The two young men carrying bows in the WS photo must be Lord Rama (with the bluish skin tone) and his younger brother Laxman exiled to the forest (also from the Ramayana). Its likely that the procession was taken out on the occasion of Dussehra.

Thank you Satya.

Years ago I posted this photo from the same procession. A few years later I showed this one of children watching the parade.

Here is a larger version of today's main photo. It was scanned from a Kodachrome slide, and so was the WS.
