Photographer's Note

The Hindu temple is the place where the gods make themselves visible to man. Its design is intended to dissolve the boundaries between man and the divine. The sacred image of the deity and other symbols are contained within the sanctuary (garbhagriha, womb-chamber). The image of the deity is not the deity itself, but only a temporary residence for the deity. There being no priest on duty at the time, this visitor placed a tika on his own forehead, before exiting the sanctuary to continue pradakshina through the ambulatory.
