Photographer's Note

At 6'oclock, in this vertical section of the dome, two elephants are engaged in "trunk-wrestling". Above them Sardul Singh is depicted, smoking a hookah or shisha in court. Above this scene, in the top 1/3 of the photograph, Rama and his brother, assisted by the monkey god Hanuman and army, head off to Sri Lanka to do battle with the evil demon-king Ravana. Various modes of transportation are shown - carts being pulled by horses. Rama and brother have their own carriage. Everywhere, there are Hanuman-like figures acting as escorts.

The word "chhatri" is translated as umbrella, and the object is significant in that it can refer either to royalty or deities. A chhatri may be found in isolation, or, as here at Parasrampura, one of a number in a cremation ground.
