Photographer's Note

The dome of the chhatri is seated on 12 pillars which, in turn, rest on a platform. It was necessary for me to clamber on to the platform, as the lip of the dome did not afford a great deal of clearance. My immediate impression was that I had entered the theatre of a planetarium and the lights had just been turned out. The interior of the dome - very spacious - is a riot of painting in the most brilliant of colours. Looking up, naturally, the eyes are drawn to the incredibly beautiful central design. With its own border, there is a ring of tall ladies, holding each others' hands and dancing. In between them are smaller individuals - the musicians. These are among the finest paintings in Shekhawati.
