Photographer's Note

In Jainism, two main sects prevail: the Svetambaras and the Digambaras. For pious Svetambaras who carry all of their earthly possessions with them, five items are essential: (1) a dhoti, which constitutes a change of clothing and doubles as bedding; (2) the odhni similar to a shawl as cover and to sit on; (3) rajo haran used to gently sweep away insects without harming them; (4) patra which serves as a dish to receive offerings of food; and (5) the eightfold mupatti, which acts as a mask to prevent them inhaling any living creature.

Digambaras believe that man has to renounce all possessions, including clothing, to achieve redemption.

This is an image of a Svetambara in the Mahavira Temple of Osian. The eyes are prominent and enamelled - thus reflecting light. Sometimes these are set with precious gems. There is a prominent tilak on the forehead.
