Street barber, a photo from Maharashtra, West

Photographer's Note

I spent three hours shooting in Andheri bazaars in north Mumbai (Bombay)... very populated areas, full of street life.
This man is a street barber and his customer is having what apparently is one of his first shaves...The background is provided courtesy of the sugar cane juice shop just behind... That is out on the sidewalk of course...

I like this concept. I'm not quite sure of the POV. Maybe in a similar situation a little lower and to the right when the left cheek was being shaved.

Of course you can't miss your shot, but I would like to see this scene with the razor against the cheek being shaved....but you may have a shot like that....or he didn't have enough peach fuzz to shave off on the cheek nearest you...Ha Ha.

Hi Laurent,
when I saw the icon I was afraid it ould be a dentist doing his cruel work.
with my western brain certainly I'm thinking about the hygienic conditions for the barber's instruments.
Anyway a great street shot.

nice daylife picture! It's true that the boy seems at his first shaves, while the barber seems very experienced and relaxed. The sugar canes add curiosity to the picture. Maybe I would have tried to saturate colours just a little bit...

Hi Laruent. I remember bugging one my friends when the peach fuzz just started showing up at puberty. It was time to shave it off but he liked to keep it to show he was becoming a man. I simply told him it looked like he hadn't shaved in months!!

This casual shot of the outdoor shave is certainly catching and effective. You have captured well the expressions of the barber and his customer. I also like your background here, the hues and tones, and tight cropping and framing. The bright light on the light coloured clothes is well handled without overexposure. Well done.

An engaging street scene. (Reminds me of the time I had a haircut on a Hanoi street). Great contrast in the sense that the boy has a well shaped hair but the barber appears to need a haircut for himself. Good vivid colors, and the vertical sugarcane stalks on the bg add appeal. Regards. Danilo

Good shot of the daily life. It seems unusual to western guys, to be shaved this way, outdoors, but it can be seen in some rural areas in Brazil as well.

Une nouvelle image de rue trés vivante et trés naturelle. Trés bonne netteté (j'aime bien le reste de mousse à raser derrière l'oreille). Jolie couleur des bambous en arrière-paln.

Une bonne illustration de cette scene de vie quotidienne, avec cet arriere plan on n'a pas l'impression que ca se passe dans une grande ville mais au fond d'une campagne reculee. Alors tu trouves tes marques avec ton nouvel appareil ?
