Photographer's Note

After the extinction of dinosaurs and pterosaurs 65.95 MYA, it was another 10 million years before the first appearance of crocodiles. These include all varieties of large aquatic reptiles that tend to live in fresh-water habitats (although not exclusively). They are more closely related to dinosaurs and birds than other reptiles. Ambush hunters, they possess excellent hearing. Crocodiles are able to move quickly over short distances even in water. Powerful jaw muscles and sharp teeth facilitate tearing of and holding on to flesh of prey. They have a cerebral cortex and a four-chambered heart. There are no sweat glands and thus heat is released through the open mouth. Sex of an individual specimen is determined by the ambient temperature at birth. Their average life-span is 70 years.

This photograph was taken at the Indodra Fossil and Dinosaur Park in Gandhinagar.
