Photographer's Note

Continuing with my encounters with the remarkable ragpicking women of Ramapir Tekra slum.

These women leave the tekra at 5:00am to reach CG Road (a shopping district) at 5:30am to collect rags - many of them will work until 4:00pm, whilst others will leave at noon to attend to household duties. They will collect anything from newspaper, cardboard and polythene water pouches.

There is a whole group...from the elderly to young children. I asked Tejal (the girl), how old she was...she replied "about five". I think she was more like 12 or 13. I was charmed by her...

This is tiring work, as the women will earn an average of 3rupees per kilo of material. The rubbish will be sold on for more than four times this value as it passes through many people/places.
