Photographer's Note
Listed as a Unesco heritage site, Brihadeeshwara Temple, perhaps the oldest Shiva temple in India has welcomed all -- from powerful kings passing through its hallowed portals seeking divine blessings for the good of their subjects, to the commoner.
Built in 1,010 AD by Raja Raja Chola, the 216-feet temple remains a grand structure, unparalleled in size and splendour and is visible from any area in Thanjavur, perhaps the only such temple in India having this characteristic.
Dwarfing the devout is a huge stone sculpture of the Nandi, the bull which Lord Shiva rides, considered second largest in India.in front of the temple tower.
The inner sanctum houses something possibly not found in other temples -- some rare paintings, which were not discovered until a few decades ago. However, access to the paintings is restricted as they are in a very fragile state.
Officials of Archaelogical Survey of India, which maintains the temple, say it represents the zenith of the Dravidian type of temples in its purest form, has precision of conception and execution and magnitude of scale.

Hello Lakshmi,
I like the warm cold color contrast between the ladies in blue & yellow saris bottom right. It adds interest to an already superb shot of these ornate temple carvings. Good sharpness & upward pov. Tfs!

Hi Lakshmi,
only the ladies and boy who stand there gave us an idea how big the place is. A beautiful sight of statues carved onto the red/brown wall's.
Magnificent place, I'd take this from a farther POV - only if possible.
Have a nice weekend,
Ike

Hello Dear Lakshmi !
The well-textured temple façade imposes an overwhelming presence in the image. And the deeply curved out surfaces create a very successful backdrop to the scene depicted. With the unknown expanse and the extent of the façade and the warm tone in its surfaces, for the background itself it is worth seeing this photo. Combined with the presence of a few people in front of the surface, the image is successfully activated for the presentation. It is incredible how beliefs can create a structure of this size and of this presence all in stone. The photo caries effectively the message, I wonder how those people climbed to the level of the façade where they are found in the photo. It is a very well framed and is nicely presented.
With my best and kindest regards,
Have a very pleasant Friday, Lakshmi

Hi Lakshmi,
Pretty composition in which the presence of visitors also serves to enhance the architecture. I might have cut the metal staircase on the left, I think it damages the beauty of the whole.

Delphine

Hi Lakshmi
Wonderful capture in quite tame light is picking out the delicate stone carvings of the temple and ideally framed. Beautiful and unique architecture displaying the skillful talents of artists and craftsmen on that era. The fine detail and repetitive effect of the sculptures is mesmerising. Love how you have composed this with those figs adding a sense of scale and human interaction as well. Excellent infor note to guide us through. Just breathtakingly captivating and you have certainly captured the spirit of India so well. Excellent shot of high quality.
Best regards
