Photographer's Note

The rain continued to fall!

From the shelter of the 100-pillared hall, I took some photographs of the large and open courtyard in front of the gopuram. From the centre of the photograph to the left in order, the objects are: (1) an elevated mandapa of which there are two - this used, most likely in festivals, to support the divine murti in a swing so all may view; (2) a deepa sthamba - light post (column); (3) bali pratha, a sacrificial stone used in ritual sacrifice (usually these days, a goat); and (4) a brass-coated garuda sthamba - light standard representing the eagle as Lord Vishnu's vahana.
