Photographer's Note
Certainly nothing special, just a snapshot, but I liked to see this young saleslady using the temporary lack of customers to cuddle her baby. She was selling onions in a market street somewhere in Chennai (formerly Madras), but for the time being business seemed to have been slow.
I had no idea about the building in the background, but our friend Loong (foxy) tells me it looks like the High Court. A quick internet search confirms this. Thank you Loong!
Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu state and one of the mega cities of southern India. I spent a couple of days here before I flew back to Calcutta, where I had started my Indian journey in 1987 and where I was to catch a flight back home.
A few photos from Calcutta will follow, before I go somewhere else.
This was scanned from a Kodachrome slide.

Very special, Gert, the mother and baby on hands grabbing most attention here.
The vibrant background market sight is in great contrast to the caring lady.
Excllent capture, fine scan outcome.
Have a nice new day,

Hello Gert,
A market on the edge of a busy street is not the most pleasant place for a baby to stay for a longer time. A good reason to be cuddled regularly.
This market place seems to be located at a bus station.
Good capture of the busy atmosphere (although this lady had no customers at the time).
The other side of the street appears to have fairly new buildings.
Any idea which building at the back those two towers belong to?
Best regards, Paul

Hi Gert,
You have captured well the mother taking care of her child and other daily activities. The point of view is showing the details of the buildings. The light is giving good colors output. Have a nice day.

Hello Gert,
It's a brilliant snapshot, showing the role of 'Maternal Bonding' , the deep affection for the little baby , even for a little moment she gets.
I see that she is not the only one 'cuddling' , two mothers more.....one carrying the baby on the hip and another one carrying on the shoulder. All of them , very young.
I've full respect for the young mothers, it's not easy and they've to do anything to keep the wolf from the door. Like this photo shown, selling only onions.
Ha!Ha! I can't help noticing a sign ( left ), beware of running pick-pocket.....
It's a beautiful unhurried scene amid the chaos traffic.
Btw, I do like the two towers. I've a look at it, I think it's the High Court building.
Thanks for sharing this 'Motherly Love' scanned photo.

Hej Gert,

Hi Gert
A wonderful image of this lively market, very well the foreground with the saleswoman with her son and the other woman who goes to her, then a tremendous crowd of people and in the background two beautiful towers, which personalize the photo.
Very good color that increases the attractiveness of the image.
Superb brightness and sharpness management to enjoy the details.
Well seen and done. I like it.
Have a nice day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hi Gert
funny to think this baby is now probably 35 years old or so.
I wonder how the mother is doing too. I get the feeling the same selling of food is still going on here today, unless this is one of those Indian cities that has been transformed due to technology and tourism. Look at all those buses in the bg, that's interesting too - i mean think about it - how often do you see 4 large buses in a row like that. classic Gert shot, I like it. cheers

Hello Gert, a nice scene from Chennai, typical for the Asian, or African, or also South American countries where the mothers are all the time with the babies, and such thing as the pram is not known. and usually, the older siblings still being kids, take care of the younger ones. An interesting row of the blue buses. I do not remember them. Funny sign on the left side. excellent quality as always.
Best regards Malgo

Hello Gert,
A superb daily life scene of the woman taking time out from her onion selling to hug her child. Her bright red t shirt is the perfect contrast o the cyan sari worn by the woman at right. Tfs!

Hello Gert,
I would imagine that the babies are very much in the care of their mothers so if it's market day, the babies have to go too.
It looks like a very busy market, with lots of people and lots of buses, and, maybe, was taken shortly after the monsoon rains that you have described, since the floor looks quite wet.
I'm surprised by how many of the commodities are ranged on the floor.
Your photograph captures the atmosphere of the market very well, with a vast sense of depth to the towers beyond.
I am curious about the sign showing someone running. I wonder if you can remember its purpose.
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert, no stall or table just a piece of hessian sacking on which to place the onions; and where does the baby go to when the mother is serving her customer?
It is a very interesting scene, so busy, with people as far as the eyes can see.
A row of buses, was this the road or a bus stop?
Quite modern buildings in the background, and the two towers make an alternative focal point.
Excellent scan, as always.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hej Gert,
Excellent close angle shot of the mother and child on a market. No table and obviously you can't make big money selling onions. Row of similar buses catch my attention in the background.

Hi Gert
What a busy place! But at the same time we have to remember that every open market is like that. Beautiful record of daily life in India.

Hi Gert
Hearth-warming scene. The lady with the baby stands out from the crown in many ways, including the distance and the red top. Her merchandise is a nice addition to the image.
Have I told you I'm always impressed with your use of depth of field in your street photography?
How did you feel about going back home? Looking forward to getting some rest from travel or apprehensive about your trip coming to an end?
Best wishes
Kasia
