Photographer's Note

Waiting for the Hindu floats of Gods to all be ready, the band plays on, while members twirl long streamers, and dance to the beat! It is the annual Elephant festival for the main temple in Varkala Beach, at temple junction. The holy elephants are going to the beach with drummers, and fanfare, for a puja, a holy ceremony washing the Goddess in the Arabian sea. This group traveled in a different direction, to meet at the temple many hours later. Women, and foreigners, are no longer allowed on the beach (since the year before). I followed this portion of the festivities for a while. They travel very fast on foot...Later are massive fireworks and huge explosions of gun powder for hours!
