Photographer's Note

After spending about an hour at the Vizag fishing harbour, we drove down Beach road towards the Old Town area. Just as we took a right near St Aloysius Anglo Indian High School, we were greeted by this gateway built in the Islamic style. It seems to be a fairly recent construction in good maintenance and makes quite a striking sight in the middle of the otherwise faded old locality. One side is marred by the electric post with wires going right through the structure. What is written in Telugu on the facade, below the original Urdu, translates to (according to my Telugu friends): worship the creator and not the creation.

The old town of Visakhapatnam, also known as One Town, near the old post office, was once the hub of a miniscule town. The neighbourhood used to be very colourful with a combination of Anglo-Indian community, Bengali and Fishermen community and the fiery Kabuliwalas who made the old town area their home.
