Photographer's Note

The “Ganga Aarti” (river worship) ceremony is held at sunset at a number of places in India as the holy river winds its way from mountain to sea. There is a large and spectacular ceremony each evening in Hardiwar, but this picture was taken at a smaller event in nearby Rishikesh, close to the river’s source. This more intimate ceremony allowed me to get much closer to the priests. The priests line up along the river bank with torches and are accompanied by a wonderful spiritual music. The boy here is pouring water from the holy river on the torch stand to cool them for the priest.

This evocative and spiritual ceremony is certainly one the highlights of Indian culture and Rishikesh is one of the best places to witness it.
