Photographer's Note

Along a narrow ghat in Varanasi in between the old city and "the burning ghat" I took this picture of three sadhu's while on a river cruise in a shaky row boat. One of these sadhu's whose face is rubbed with ash (and possibly the two other men) is a follower of Shiva. I believe followers of Shiva will rub their face and body with ash from a "sacred fire" to symbolize renouncement of worldly possessions and for other reasons that I'm unable to recall. I know white symbolizes mourning and renouncement in the Hindu religion.

This picture was taken a little further out and cropped down to display the intensity of the man on the left's stare. I don't think they realized I was taking a photo of them because I used my 55-300 Nikkor DS zoom lens.
