Photographer's Note

This picture was taken while on a dawn row boat on the Ganga in Varanasi. I thought it captured the moment of daily life on the river in this ancient city however I can't decide if the boatman in the foreground standing up adds or detracts from the photo.

Although the short row was pleasant and peaceful the industrial pollution and untreated sewage that flows into the Ganga on a daily basis was highly apparent and is choking and killing the river. I believe fecal matter in the river is several hundred times the normal limit for a healthy river.

Programs have been put into place to clean up the river but as is the story in India, money goes missing, bribes get paid, etc., etc. We got in discussions with some Indians who agreed that something needs to be done to save the river but we also spoke with many Indians who believe the Ganga is timeless and nothing can cause her harm. I never understood how people can trash and pollute something which they absolutely revere.
