Photographer's Note

The Sand Mandala is a wonderful Tibetan Buddhist tradition illustrating the transitory nature of everything material. The Lamas of the monastery work tirelessly for months to create these magnificent pieces of art from colored grains of sand(a mandala itself is a metaphysical or symbolic representation of the cosmos, derived from Hinduism and used as an object for focusing attention during meditation). Then, on a specified day, once it has been viewed and all its functions of ceremony fulfilled, it is systematically destroyed.
