Photographer's Note

This photo was taken in Naggin lake, which is the smaller part of the famous Dal lake in Srinagar, capital of Kashmir.

Naggin lake is a quieter, nicer and cleaner part of the bigger lake and has fewer Houseboats. Houseboats are an idea brought by the British to Kashmir. They loved the area but the ruler did not allow them to build houses there so they overran his prohibition by buliding their houses on the lake!

Today tourists can taste the old British colonial feel by spending few wonderful days on a houseboat and to be fed by a local Kashmiri familiy. Be cautious when you choose one, since some of them are in horrible shape. Try to find an honest and reputed host.
