Photographer's Note

One of the largest and architecturally impressive monasteries of Ladakh, Thiksey Gompa or monastery is situated 20 kms from Leh on the top of the hill. Built some 600 years ago, Thiksey consists of 12 levels ascending a hillside, culminating in an incarnate lama’s private abode at the summit. The Gompa contains 10 temples, below the monastery itself is chapels and houses of monks stretching down the hillside. There are about 100 monks of the Gelug-Pa or yellow- hat sect of Buddhism.

I captured the majestic location of Thiksey Monastery from the open grounds moving towards Shey. The chortens or stupas in the FG are made of bricks & clay. This scene left me with little doubt that the 12-storey complex is one of the finest examples of Ladakhi art and architecture. Perched atop a hill slope at about 11,800ft (~3,600m), it is indeed a stunning sight
