Photographer's Note

The Temple at Sarahan in Himachal Pradesh is home to the mightiest goddess of the region - Bhimakali.
Revered for centuries by the hill folk, the offerings to her are animal sacrifice, mainly goats and sheep. She in turn favours and fulfils the wishes of only her true believers. Legend has it that every enterprise that involves dangerous travel in the mountains of the Himalayas will fail or succeed depending on her grant of favour! Incase your travels suffer it may be that she was not convinced of the purity of your heart !!

Bhimakali is taken out in a glorious procession, once a year, through the small town of Sarahan, during the Dussehra festival to bless the people of the region who come from far away villages to pay their respects. It is a wondrous sight and one that the outer world may never see as most of us who pray there think it disrespectful to photograph her !!

She is the goddess I pray to and posting this picture is both obeisance and “thank you” for protecting me in the mountains for over 40 years!!
