Photographer's Note

The local rock band: These men are a part of a larger group that makes up the 'holy' band of the region. In the mountains, the regional deities are highly revered and respected. The deity usually a form of spiritual energy, occasionally enters a priest(or even an ordinary guy who lives a pious life) and throws him into a trance. These men blow large bronze horns and beat loud drums and gongs to help the man's transition into a supernatural being. Then a procession is carried out with the possessed man in the center and the band slowly walking through the streets of the village to reach a temple, where finally a goat is sacrificed to please the deity. I witnessed one such sacrifice(not in Sarahan where this picture was taken...but at Hatu Peak, Narkanda in 2010)...and it was an overwhelming(and scary) experience. More than anything its the music played by such men that haunts you.

A word of advice: If you ever come accross any such ceremony in progress...immediately clear the way of the procession, lower your head in respect and quietly observe whats going on.DO NOT CLICK PICTURES WITHOUT PERMISSION(my friend learnt it the hard way!). Any form of disrespect is not tolerated and may lead to violent responses from the locals. Anyways, respecting the local culture and sentiments should be the top priority of any good traveler.
