Photographer's Note

Villagers of Nako, in the Western Himalaya, prepare to visit a local festival. Sacred texts are being carried around the village to renew the protective spell and weave that surround it.

In this image I tried to capture something of the mood of both deference and chattiness, the feeling that joy and religious duty are very close to each other for the people of Nako. The old lady to the left is the focus - she has removed her cap, is very deferential and inward, noble even, while the lady to the right is just happily chatting away. Even thought the composition is cluttered, with all the other people around, I think it serves to evoke the long procession of people loosely walking alongside each other, alternating seemlessly between serious prayer and cheerful chats.
