Photographer's Note

This the first of the series of submissions I have planned showcasing my Trekking Expedition to Pin-Parvati Pass in Himachal Pradesh, India during May-June 2007.

Mantalai Lake is the origin of the Parvati river which flows through the Kulu valley in Himachal Pradesh, India. At a height of 13600 feet, this is the only time when it remains considerably ice free. The Parvati glacier feeds the lake which in turn feeds the river. The river is considered holy by the locals. At the time of taking the picture, the air temp was about 6 deg Cels. and thin sheets of ice was floating on the lake.

The Pin-Parvati Pass (Height : 18000 Feet) acts as a watershed and connects the Kulu and Spiti valleys in Himachal. The pass encompasses the Parvati & Pin glaciers which give rise to the Parvati River (Flowing through Kulu district) and the Pin River (Flowing through Spiti sub-division). The green Parvati valley strikes quite a contrast against the stark dry Pin valley.
