Photographer's Note

A cow on the street of Delhi (Paharganj) helps recycle some of the garbage.

I only spent a day in Delhi but from what I could gather the typical way to handle garbage was to throw it on the street where somebody would eventually gather it up and pile it in neighborhood garbage pile like this. Then, I guess, it would be picked up by truck and put elsewhere. In the meantime, cows, goats and pigs might pick their way through the pile and "recycle." This ancient system wasn't designed for modern plastics so I think some things need to be rethought.

The most mysterious part of this whole system is why we didn't see any vermin -- rats or crows -- helping themselves to the open garbage. Anybody can tell me why?
