Photographer's Note

While in Delhi I was lucky enough to take some singing lessons from a practitioner of qawwali, the Sufi singing of ghazals and other religious poetry. On his advice, I frequently visited the Nizamuddin Dargah in Delhi, one of the most extraordinary places you can visit there. Every night qawwali groups would sing for the audience, before and after evening prayer. This is just a snapshot of one group in action - the hand gesture is typical of the genre.
