Photographer's Note

Sunset at Victoria Memorial in Kolkata.

Designed by Sir William Emerson, this 184 ft high monument was built as a tribute to the success of the British Empire in India. Inaugurated in 1921, this monument was dedicated to Queen Victoria.

The Indo-Saracenic style design of the structure represents a fusion of British and Mughal architecture. White Makrana marbles were used in the construction of Victoria Memorial Hall. The massive Memorial stands enclosed in an area of 64 acres of a lake and gardens designed by Lord Redesdale and Sir David Prain.

Currently it serves as a museum and is a major tourist attraction in Kolkata, India.
