Photographer's Note

On the the Mahananda River at Malda, right on the enbankment built to protect the town from floods, there is a Banyan Tree under whose cool shade is this shrine to Lord Shiva, to which devotees offer 'puja' (worship) in mornings and evenings. There in the afternoon, tired wayfarers rest, goats and lambs play, birds dance around.
Lord Shiva is one of the Hindu Trinity who destroys creations when it becomes too much laden with sin. The other two of the Trinity are Vishnu the Creator and Brahma the Protector.
