Photographer's Note

This is Akshay Karmakar, a wood craftsman from Agradwip in Burdwan district of West Bengal. This young man carries on the legacy of his ancestors of crafting wood in traditional style. The subjects are mainly from holy scriptures, while dolls and other things are made as popular demand. The speciality of the woodcrafts of Burdwan is that they come in geometrical shapes -- square and rectangular cross-sections. Cheap and light, these art items carry the folk designs of Burdwan district.

In the Handicraft fair, he was one of several people who have come to sell their work, and also demonstrating how they work on the raw materials. Here, he is seen concentrating hard on the delicate design on an idol of Hindu god Ganesh.

This is my 150th post from India. :o)

Going into a phase off, not sure if I'll post any more before I get regular after 18 Feb. See'ya.... ;o)
