Photographer's Note

Durga puja is celebrated all over west bengal with full grandeur during the month of Sept-Oct every year. The making of clay idols of the goddess starts 2 months prior to that inside a traditionally ghinzy and dark potters’ quarter of north kolkata, known as kumortuli (Bengali: কুমোরটুলী). By virtue of their artistic productions these potters have moved from obscurity to prominence.

Here is one such master craftsman carving a beautiful face of the deity out of clay. The child sitting next to him is listening from him the epics which are much said about tell-tales about the powers of this goddess.
