A Touch of Rural Bengal - VI

This image was captured at Digha too on the first of January this year,like the previous two images.In this image you can see a man selling fresh coconut loaded on his bicycle at the same fair.In Indian Villages,it is a common sight to see salesmen of all kinds from garments to fish selling their products loaded on bicycle like this.The transportation is easier and practically free of cost. Bicycle still remains the basic mode of transportation for the common man all over rural India.

Hello Farhat,
this is such a lovely shot,full of colour and interest with the coconut seller and his well loaded bicycle making a fine subject whilst the busy market scene adds a sense of environment to a fine daily life photograph.

The decrepit cap, the soiled shirt, a dirty 'gamcha' covering a probably torn trouser: all tell tale signs of a poor coconut seller, who will be happy just to sell all of them off.

I guess he can't really ride the bike now?
he walks up and down hoping for a sale?
I wonder how many he sells in a day?

Hello Farhat,
A very nice snap-shot from a rural market. The coconut salesman is well captured, isolated from the immediate surroundings but with a lively background, and it's amazing to watch his heavy load. It's a very well composed and well cropped photo with lots of local atmosphere. If anything, I might have liked the picture to be slightly darker, in order to have the colours and contrasts increased, and maybe the blue tone just slightly reduced.

Hi Farhat,

I suppose it's a good workout either way, actually riding the bike, or trying to keep it balanced with the heavy loads. Great idea and use of it to haul around your products though, and you've captured that very well in this shot. Love the depth of field, the slightly blurred background still allows us to see the other activity taking place, putting this gentlman and his work into context. A telling picture of daily life, well portrayed. Enjoy the new week ahead. All the best.
