Photographer's Note

popala means grand father.this grandfather lives in a small tibetan refugee village in the eastern himalayas of inida.he fled to india in 1959 during the first wave of tibetan refugees after the tibetan uprising.he was arrested and was prisoned for being a religious man.somehow escaped the shackles and fled.when he came here,he started off as a coolie.later bought 1 horse.then slowly became owner of 10s of horses.slowly brought up his 4 of his 5 children live abroad and are really well off.1 son lives with him and runs a small little home stay stuff in the village.they are well off too.his grandchild goes to an english medium school.but this man has remained the same.still largely speaks tibetan or broken english or 82 wakes up 5 in the morning, drives his cows for grazing with the help of his loyal dog.carries home made butter on his back for sale, does almost entire daily work on his own. he is a real hero in my eyes.
