Photographer's Note
The Mechanic : In this image you can see a mechanic repairing a gas oven in his little shop in central Calcutta. From the kind of kitchen apparatus on display in his shop,it is evident that he repairs pressure cookers and juicer-mixers too, apart from gas ovens.Such small shops can be found in large numbers, especially in the Chandni Chowk area, where mechanics of mobile/cell phones outnumber others by a large margin. In India, the policy for middle class people is to buy such gadgets/instruments etc.which have a longer life or are repairable at low cost.In this way,you can expect a normal color TV to last for at least 15 years and a car for 20 years. But the onslaught of the consumer market is eating into such old miserly mindset.Giants like Samsung,Nokia,Suzuki expect you to believe in the use and throw policy. But as you can observe here,it will certainly take a few more decades before Indians start to throw their stuffs away before repairing them at least once.

Hello Farhat,
If everyone would behave like Indians, actually repairing things, the world economy could collaps :-). We are supposed to buy new things regularly to keep the GDP's forever growing. But the world would be less fun to watch without people like this man in his small repair shop. It's a great photo, full of fascinating details, and the light and colours are superb.
Kind regards,

Hi Farhat,
this is a very nice shot of this mechanic and his small workshop. In Sweden we can´t see scenes like this anymore. Most things are thrown away as you say, and that is a pity in my opinion. I am a big fan of old mechanical things and machines that can be repaired. It is like a hobby for me to repair and nice when things are in order again. A sharp and clear shot and an excellent contribution to TE, tfs!

Hi Farhat
I think it's great to see this, a skilled man repairing that which can be to extendits life and avoid needless waste. Although I live surrounded by it, I really dislike the throwaway culture and have great admiration for reuse. This is a beautifully composed image too, the man is so perfectly clear and so we'll positioned in the shot while l around he is surrounded by the signs of his trade. Very nice scene and interesting note
Thanks as always

Salam Farhat. At first, reading your note I was full of admiration for the practice of repairing things (my father used to be able to repair toasters, irons, radios, shoes, cars, washing machines...), BUT then i came across your expression "miserly mindset" and I found this term odd in the context. Surely one would want these men to flourish as they in their modest ways lessen the impact of pollution and degradation of our earth by prolonging the life of appliances and so lessening the needless orgy of consumerism and so the belching of pollutants into the sky by factories. This man for me embodies a range of knowledge, skills and patience- something which is becoming less and less visible in our world.
Regards. Klaudio.

We need a man like this is Windhoek Farhat. It would save money, provide employment and do something to stem our throw-away mindset!
A great DL scene that shows very clearly that a will to work and provide one's family with the necessities of life requires dedication and a very small workshop.
A great lesson!

Hello Farhat,
It is true, here in the West, at least, we are becoming more and more the throwaway society taken for a ride by the manufacturers and their incessant advertising. This is a very successful image, well composed and ideally exposed. I like the expression of concentration on the man's face with his glasses at the end of his nose and the many items of interest to be observed. Excellent depiction of daily life in the workshops of Calcutta.

Hello Farhat,
A fine picture of the repair man engrossed in his trade. Very good DL and street photography. I think not throwing away products is a good practice for Indian economy it helps to generate alternate means of livelihood as this man in your picture. However with the onslaught of consumerism these kind of marginal players are already in a spot of bother and will be extinct pretty. Good for you to have captured one of the few remaining. A photo with fine detailing and superb clarity. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Farhat,
So refreshing to see people still working with their hands...seems to be a lost art these days!? Easy to see why this has been a popular shot...not only is it a great depiction of daily life, but there are many colors and textures to admire along with the myriad of materials. A solid link, one with the other in terms of man and his trade. Lovely result! Enjoy the new day. All the best.

Hi Farhat,
You're capturing well this small repairing shop in city by a good composition and excellent tone/clarity, so it's interesting and impressive yp see the spectacle which a repairman repairs mechanic insturument by using suitable tool at his narrow workplace. It's also impressive in repair parts on shelf. To be sure, consumers can hold down big expenses by repairng the goods and can use a goods for a long time.
Kind regards,

Hello my dear friend
I have to suggest something to you
you must publish all your photos
showing professions like this
mechanic repairing a gas oven
in his little shop
your notes are really useful
as always
in other countries it is
very difficult to see scenery
like this with the mechanic
so all those photos must
be issued

Ciao Farhat
Saluti
