Photographer's Note

An Evening in Calcutta - II : This is the second image from this newly created series. The earlier shot had been uploaded several weeks back.I discontinued my series on Konarak Temple as I got to understand that similar photographs on regular basis may not arouse continuous interest among my friends on TE.Hence I decided to post something different from Calcutta.My other photographs on Konarak Temple shall be uploaded soon and the series shall be concluded in days to come.

In this image you can see a person who is everybody's favorite in Calcutta : Jhaalmuri Wallah.
Jhaalmuri in Bengali means Superspicy puffed rice, a popular street food from Calcutta,which you wont get in any other Indian City.A person who sells this delicious stuff is known as Jhaalmuri Wallah.In this evening hours shot, you get to see one of these jhaalmuriwallahs busy with his business on a crowded market area of Central Calcutta.

You can prepare Jhaalmuri at home with this recipe :

Ingredients :

• 2 cups of Muri(puffed rice)
• 4 tbsp Chana Chur
• 4 tbsp Sev (bengal gram vermicelli)
• 3 tbsp raw Peanuts (roast or shallow-fry and drain on paper towels)
• 2 tbsp fresh Coconut (thinly sliced)
• 1 Green Chili (very finely chopped)
• 1 Onion (finely chopped)
• 1 tbsp Coriander Leaves (chopped)
• 1 Boiled Potato (peeled and chopped)
• 1 Tomato (finely chopped)
• 1/2 Cucumber (finely chopped)
• 1/2 tsp Mustard Oil
• 1/2 tsp Oil from your Favorite Pickle
• Juice of 1/2 Lemon

How to make :

Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and season with salt.Jhaalmuri is ready to be served.Serve immediately so that the muri does not become soggy.

The unity of the deep blue sky and the tarps under the vendors is superb!

And I will check the Indian restaurants in Austin for Jhaalmuri -- if I can't find it, thanks to your note, I'll be able to make some myself!

Hello Farhat,
I like very much the rich and vivid colours you've captured under the artificial lighting. Their impact is amazing, they give to the picture a graphical aspect but when you look at them closely, they look natural too. Your point of view is excellent as it gives us a glimpse of both sides, the vendors' and the visitors'. There's great sense of movement and the scene in the foreground stands out like 3D. When I signed up for TE, I didn't know I was signing for a cookbook! Now, the next thing to do is to find the American equivalents of all the ingredients.

A lively and fun filled scene with an exciting atmosphere, captured with the beautiful blue hour touch of light. I might have blurred the grainy sky but this is still a superb blue hour and daily life shot. Good warm cold color contrasts between the blue and yellow and excellent sharpness and vertical framing. The reddish roof adds good linear perspective. The night market has been well presented here. Tfs!
