Photographer's Note

The not so pleasant side of religion... two goats been sacrificed to Goddess Durga during the biggest festival of West Bengal, Durga puja (Puja means worship in local language). People celebrate with musical instruments called 'Dhol' and 'Kansa'. The boy in the picture is beating his kansa while the goats were being slaughtered

Picture taken in the vilage of Bahiri near Kolkata.

I am attaching part of a reply I gave to a critique, because it is about the image, and after writing the
reply, I felt I should have written it in the notes section of the image.

Thanks for your comment. I could not but help replying to your comment. I am glad that you were disgusted by looking at the image, because if you were not, then I would have totally failed as a photographer.

Yes, it looks really horrible, and I have shot it for that. My job as a photographer, and in general I think for any photographer, is to show the world, make a beautiful thing look more beautiful, and a horrible thing even more frightening - to make people see the world in a way they have not seen before. Thats why I have shot this. I myself am an vegetarian, and an animal an nature lover, and it is ironic how most of the other people present in the scene, who were non-vegetarian, were too frightened to look at the scene, and for many others, it was not so uncommon, and so they looked at it with complete indifference!! I am not totally satisfied with this image, because I think I should have done a much much better job to show it in a much more artistic and 'emotionally charging' way. But the situation was not easy, and I had tried almost my level best.

Anyways, thanks for your comments.
