Photographer's Note

A photograph of the caves at Khandagiri, a few kms from Bhubaneswar. These are actually on the twin hills of Khandagiri and Udayagiri and were the dwelling retreats of the Jain ascetics. They generally consist of a row of cells which are dormitories. This is further substantiated by the fact that there is a sloping rise of the floor at the rear end to serve the purpose of a pillow. Apprently, some of the cells were later converted to shrines.
The place itself is pretty 'touristy' with quite a few 'all-purpose' shops selling everything ranging from camera rolls to chai to fried snacks. Also, monkeys abound. And bold ones they are too. In fact, when i was there, there was this one monkey which had the audacity to calmly jump across the lap of a woman who was seated on one of the steps leading up to the temple in Udayagiri minding her own business. :)
