Photographer's Note

Experiences of the crazy traveller. Evening in Mestia.
I haven't heard about Svaneti before but when I saw Paul's photos and notes, I knew I had to go there. It seemed the most difficult part of our journey. Everywhere they told us that the road is bad and sometimes impassable, specially in winter or early spring time. When we were in David Gareja, we met a monk. He recommended us his cousin's Zula guesthouse and gave us his telephone number. We went from Tbilisi by night train (another Paul's suggestion). In high season it is hard to buy ticket, but we had no problem. It was good idea. In this way we saved a day and money for the hostel (the ticket in sleeper, with cushion and materace for a whole night trip costs less than ten USD. We came to Zugdidi early in the morning. We had to wait more than two hours till it "fills up". The views were breathtaking, specially we had marvelous sunny weather. When we came to Mestia, Zula was waiting with jeep and we could go to Ushguli. We managed it! when one has good contacts with locals it is easy :).
In the photo there are Svaneti defensive towers and high Caucasus peaks lit by the last sun rays. I am not sure what are the peaks, maybe Tetnuldi, elevation 4,858 m (15,938 ft). Other one could be Gistola elevation 4,860 m (15,940 ft) above sea level.
I hope you like this high mountain landscape.
