Ananuri – The churches of Ananuri

Here some more pictures of the wonderful castle and church complex of Ananuri, an easy day trip from the capital of Georgia.

Through one of the small windows of the castle tower I got a very nice view of the church towers with the Zhinvali reservoir and the forested mountain slopes on the background.

Two churches are part of the castle complex.
The older one dates from the first half of the 17th century of which the interior is no longer decorated. A larger Church of the Assumption is built in 1689. It’s a central dome style structure with richly decorated facades and the remains of a number of frescoes.

This and a lot more information is found on Wikipedia.

Have also a look at the pictures in the workshop if you like to see the beautiful decorations at one of the facades of the Church of the Assumption.
