Ananuri, a castle and church complex

Ananuri, a beautiful castle complex, is an easy day trip from Tbilisi.
It is situated in a wooded mountainous setting on the shore of a lake, the Zhinvali reservoir, formed by the building of a dam, the Zhinvali Dam, in 1986.
As many other fortresses, churches and monasteries in Georgia, Ananuri is built on a great photogenic location.

This fortified castle complex is built by the Dukes of Aragvi. The oldest parts date from the 13th century. It was the scene of numerous battles and remained in use until the beginning of the 19th century.

The fortifications consist of two castles. One has a large well preserved square tower. The other with a round tower is mostly in ruins.

Two churches are part of the complex. The older one dates from the first half of the 17th century of which the interior is no longer decorated. A larger Church of the Assumption is built in 1689. It’s a central dome style structure with richly decorated facades and the remains of a number of frescoes.

This and a lot more information is found on Wikipedia.

Please have also a look at the workshop where I show the same castle complex from other points of view.

Can you believe that it were pictures of Ananuri that had finally convinced me to visit Georgia?
